How a battery earns in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is a single price zone (NL), operated by TenneT. The defining story is grid congestion (netcongestie) — a connection waiting list of roughly 38 GW, about twice the country’s peak load. Batteries earn two ways: day-ahead arbitrage — the spread averaged €158/MWh over 30 days, 137 % of the average price — and congestion relief. The Netherlands charges some of Europe’s highest grid fees on standalone batteries (up to €23/MWh), but a non-firm ATR85/15 connection cuts transmission fees up to 65 %, and the Flex-e subsidy supports batteries in congestion areas.
