How a battery earns in India

India's wholesale power clears on the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) Day-Ahead Market, dispatched nationally by Grid-India (the former POSOCO) and settled by state DISCOMs; IEX alone handles roughly 85% of exchange-traded volume. As non-fossil sources crossed 51.9% of installed capacity by end-2025, midday solar now drags DAM prices toward zero while evening peaks stay firm — over the last 30 days the day-ahead spread averaged about ₹7,765/MWh, or roughly 163% of the mean price. That intraday gap is exactly what a battery arbitrages: charging cheap at noon, discharging into the peak, on top of ancillary-services revenue that CERC's 2022 rules now open to storage.
