Hungary’s grid is run by MAVIR, the MVM-group transmission operator, and its day-ahead price is set on HUPX. A solar boom — roughly 8 GW of PV by mid-2025, with a record 6,361 MW briefly covering over 90% of demand on 1 July 2025 — has pushed midday prices to zero or negative in 309 hours over January–August 2025, already more than all of 2024. That daily swing is exactly what a battery monetises: the last 30 days show a day-ahead spread of about €193/MWh, or 152% of the average price — the arbitrage revenue base. Grid-scale storage is backed by the METÁROLÓ scheme (EU RRF), which funded roughly 440 MW across ~50 projects with grants of up to 45% of CAPEX plus a 10-year contract-for-difference, while new BESS enjoys a partial network-charge exemption through end-2026. On top of arbitrage, batteries stack revenue from FCR and aFRR balancing as MAVIR joins the PICASSO and MARI platforms on 30 September 2026.
