Greece’s transmission grid is run by IPTO (ADMIE), and it is straining: renewables — including hydro — covered 56% of 2025 electricity demand, driving record day-ahead volumes but also 6.6% curtailment (1,867 GWh, roughly double 2024’s figure), with mainland corridors saturated and developers queuing for connections. That volatility is exactly what a battery monetises: over the last 30 days the day-ahead spread averaged €104/MWh — about 90% of the average price, the raw arbitrage a well-timed charge × discharge cycle can capture. Athens is backing storage hard: regulator RAAEY awarded 900 MW across three subsidised tenders (2023–2025) combining capex grants with 10-year availability CfD payments, and a new 4.7 GW merchant programme now offers priority grid connection without subsidy. Standalone units can also stack revenue in FCR, aFRR and mFRR balancing markets, turning Greece’s congestion into cash.
